Chapter 6 Distress
Chapter 6 Distress
Lin Yan woke the sleeping Lin Yu, and with a light step, she sent him up the tree. Lin Yu hadn't even realized what was happening yet.
"Wow, sister, this, this, is this qinggong (lightness skill)? Why are we up in the tree?" Lin Yu was surprised to find himself up in the tree when he woke up.
"Wait in the tree and hold on tight!" Lin Yan instructed Lin Yu. Seeing his sister's serious expression, Lin Yu didn't say anything more, hugged the tree trunk tightly, and replied, "Okay!"
After settling Lin Yu down, Lin Yan jumped down from the tree, took out a dagger from her spatial storage, and ran to the other side, away from the tree where Lin Yu was.
She waited quietly for a while, then closed her eyes to sense the movement around her. A wolf stood silently in the grass ten meters away from her, staring at her.
They hadn't ventured very deep into the forest, so there shouldn't have been any wolves or other wild beasts there. They probably came because they were grilling meat there and were attracted by the aroma.
"This guy is quite patient." Lin Yan noticed the wolf approaching them as soon as it got close, but the wolf stopped when it was about ten meters away and remained silent, just quietly watching until she lowered her guard.
Lin Yan smiled lightly, then sat down on the ground and closed her eyes to rest. After another quarter of an hour, Lin Yu, who was still in the tree, couldn't stand it any longer. A wolf darted out of the bushes and headed straight for Lin Yan.
"Ah, sister!!!" Lin Yu saw the wolf rushing over and quickly called to Lin Yan, wanting to climb down from the tree to help.
"Don't move, hold on tight!" Lin Yan quickly reassured Lin Yu.
Lin Yan had already gotten up and darted to the side when the wolf charged at her. The wolf was yellowish-gray with blackish-brown fur on its back. It was slender with strong limbs and was baring its teeth, staring at Lin Yan.
Seemingly not expecting her to react so quickly, Lin Yan leaned back and slid in, stabbing the wolf in the waist with her dagger. Then she flipped over and swung the dagger in a flurry of motion, flashing with cold light.
Wounded and enraged, the wolf turned around and pounced on Lin Yan with its claws. Lin Yan nimbly moved around, dodging the attacks, while simultaneously wielding her knife with precision and power. Soon, the wolf was severely wounded and collapsed, unable to retaliate any longer.
Lin Yan was panting heavily. "My body is still a bit weak. Several times my body couldn't keep up with my thoughts. It seems I need to practice more."
Lin Yan looked up at Lin Yu and waved, "It's alright, come down!"
Lin Yu's eyes were glazed over, his mouth agape. When he heard Lin Yan call him, he moved his eyes slightly and swallowed hard. "Oh...oh!" Then he slowly climbed down the tree.
"Wow, that's amazing... Sis, is this skill a gift from the gods?" Lin Yu turned around and looked at Lin Yan with a look of admiration and shock.
"Cough, that's right!"
"But it's still so dangerous. Next time, we should all hide in the trees. Wolves don't climb trees." Lin Yu was still scared.
"If you hide in a tree, the wolves will be lying in wait below. Running away won't solve the problem. Only by becoming stronger can you deal with all the possible dangers," Lin Yan solemnly instructed.
In the apocalypse, humanity initially sought refuge and constantly searched for safe zones. However, as human territory shrank and resources became scarce, survival remained difficult, leaving them with no choice but to fight against the zombies.
“Okay. But I’m worried about you, sister!” Lin Yu replied with his head down.
Lin Yan felt a warmth in her heart upon hearing this and gently patted her younger brother's head. "Don't worry, I still have spiritual power to use." Actually, this was just to comfort him. Lin Yan's spiritual power hadn't recovered yet. She could communicate and sense things, but she couldn't control her ability to fight using wood-type abilities. She just didn't want Lin Yu to worry too much.
"Then I need to become stronger so that I can handle danger, stand in front of my sister, and prevent her from facing danger."
"Okay, Ayu can work hard to learn martial arts so that he can protect his sister and parents in the future."
"Yes!" Lin Yu nodded emphatically.
Lin Yan looked at the dead wolf on the ground, used a dagger to skin it, and then buried the remaining wolf carcass deep to prevent it from attracting other wild beasts.
I've made too many cuts on this wolf pelt, so it probably won't sell. But I can use it myself. I'm not too picky. I'll sew it into a quilt for my mother to keep her warm in winter.
Lin Yan put the wolf pelt into the bamboo basket and called to Lin Yu, "It's getting late, we should head down the mountain."
The siblings walked down the mountain and returned to the Lin family home as the sun set.
When they got home, Lin Yan had already taken out the roasted rabbit and roasted pheasant from her spatial storage; they were still warm. Lin's parents were talking inside when Lin Yuhuan happily ran in, "Dad! Mom! We brought back some delicious food!"
"Yu'er, you're back. Looks like you had a lot of fun today!" Lin's mother said with a gentle smile.
"Yes, my sister and I caught a rabbit and a pheasant today, so you can eat meat today." In the past, under the stingy rule of the old lady Lin, the Lin family would not eat meat for a whole month. When the chickens laid eggs, the old lady Lin would give them to her eldest grandson Lin Jie as an extra meal.
Lin Yan took out roasted chicken and roasted rabbit from the bamboo basket, peeled off the tin foil, and the strong aroma of the meat was mouthwatering. Lin Yan quickly handed them to her parents and told them to eat quickly.
"It smells so good!! Did Yan'er bake this?" Lin's mother praised.
"Yes, my sister's barbecue is delicious! You should try this chicken, this beggar's chicken!" Lin Yu enthusiastically recommended to his parents.
Mr. and Mrs. Lin tore off a piece and put it in their mouths. Taking a bite, they felt the chicken's tenderness and juiciness, and couldn't help but smile, their faces beaming with happiness. "It's really delicious!"
"Yan'er, Yu'er, you should eat with us too!" Lin's father called out.
"We've already eaten; this is for you."
"Yes, I ate a lot! Mom and Dad, you should eat more!"
Inside the large house, the atmosphere was warm and cozy as people ate roast chicken, the aroma of roasted meat filling the air, when a figure appeared at the window.
Today, Lin Jie saw Lin Yan and her brother carrying bamboo baskets into the big house in the yard, and they haven't come out since.
He listened outside the door for a while, but couldn't hear what was being said inside. However, he smelled a delicious aroma of meat that made his mouth water.
He ran quickly into the second room and shouted to Li, "Mother, I want to eat meat!"
"What are you eating, meat? All you ever do is eat! Nothing else!" Li was lying on the kang (a heated brick bed) feeling drowsy when her son startled her, and she scolded him loudly.
“There’s meat. I saw my uncles eating meat inside the house,” Lin Jie said hesitantly.
"What?! Where did they get meat to eat?!" Li couldn't sit still when she heard this.
She ran out of the house and headed towards the main house. As soon as she approached the door, she smelled the aroma of meat, making her mouth water. "Those people in the main house really were secretly eating well!"
Li peeked furtively at the door for a while, wanting to push the door open and ask for some meat. Since they hadn't separated the family yet, she should have a share of what they earned.
Before the door was even pushed open, Lin Yan suddenly opened it and came out, staring intently at Li Shi. "Second Aunt, what's wrong, pacing back and forth at the door?"
Li was feeling flustered under Lin Yan's cold gaze, but when she heard her ask this, she became righteous again, "Are you guys secretly eating good food? Let me tell you, all the money our two families earn has to be handed over to the family."
"You're all eating meat in the house by yourselves. If your mother finds out, you'll be in big trouble!" Li Shi was just trying to scare Lin Yan into sharing some of the meat with her.
After all, she didn't care at all whether Old Mrs. Lin got to eat meat or not; she just wanted to eat her own, and she could get more if there were fewer people.
Lin Yan completely ignored her words and sneered, "What are you saying, Auntie? When did we eat well? Don't talk nonsense."
"What do you mean you haven't eaten? Smell this aroma, it's practically wafting out!"
"The smell? That's probably from the smoke on the mountain today. Someone was roasting chicken up there. It smelled really good; Lin Yu and I watched it for a long time!"
