Chapter 1408 Arousing Suspicion
Chapter 1408 Arousing Suspicion
Mounting on the mutated black panther was a mistake.
It was a big mistake.
Due to the excitement of reaching this place—way earlier than targeted, along with the duo being awe-stricken by the sight, they got careless and made this mistake. Compared to the traders who came here to deal business, Rex and Iris were sticking out like a sore thumb.
Both of them were akin to celestials among mortals, far too grand to be here.
Not that their clothes and appearance were too grand, but because of the black panther.
Some traders brought along carts pulled by mutated animals but the black panther was not only a mere mutated animal, it was a ninth-rank realm mutated animal. Not even the guards were mounting on a ninth-rank realm beast so they immediately garnered attention.
"Hey! Stop there!"
Once a voice called, Rex turned around while keeping his face hidden.
"Lift up your head and let me see your face," the Tabaxi guard added commandingly.
Slowly, Rex raised his face to meet the Tabaxi guard's gaze.
Upon seeing him, the Tabaxi guard frowned.
He was expecting something else but instead, he saw a weirdly furred Supernatural.
Despite forgetting about the mount, Rex didn't forget to blend himself—by only bringing out his furs, claws, and fangs. He controlled his transformation, stopping his snout from coming out and also his increase in muscle mass.
From a glance, he looked like a defected Supernatural.
Rex was now face to face with a Tabaxi, it was his first time seeing one.
He got down from the mount and stood in front of the Tabaxi.
Standing in front of him was a humanoid beast and man hybrid, a mix between a human and also a cat. Despite Rex's tall height, this Tabaxi guard was a few inches taller than him—able to look down on him.
Like a human, the Tabaxi guard was upright and had four limbs.
Short black furs poke from behind his armor, no longer than a few centimeters.
In addition, his face was that of a cat with slitted yellow eyes, whiskers, and also cat ears.
Armor-wise, the Tabaxi wore a generic plated armor with the only difference located at the collar. Unlike the other normal plated armor, the Tabaxis' helmet was an enchanted hood. It has two holes for their ears to poke out.
Upon seeing the Tabaxi guard up close, Rex scanned him with the System.
Seventh-rank realm, the guards roaming the front entrance were this strong?
Rex was mildly surprised, the fact that they were able to place a seventh-rank realm Tabaxi, on patrolling duty meant they had more to spare. And that alone made the Tabaxis—nearing if not matching the Dark Elves and Elves in terms of power.
Just as the intel stated, the Tabaxi had become a mid-rank Superrnaturarl race.
Keeping a stern look, the Tabaxi guard squinted his eyes.
"I've never seen you around," He said. "Who are you? And what brings you here?"
Instead of answering, Rex reached for his pockets inside the cloak, he was wearing—but the Tabaxi guard reacted swiftly, placing his hand on the hilt of his short sword. Seeing this, Rex paused and slowed down his movements, "Easy, I'm not taking out any weapon"
"I'm here to trade," He added, taking a couple of elixirs. "See?"
He took it from the inventory, the act of reaching for his pockets was only a fluke.
Since he is already alert, seeing someone having space magic would make this worse.
Upon spotting the vials, the Tabaxi guard gave a nod, before shifting his attention to Iris, still seated atop the mutated black panther. Approaching the beautiful beast he gestured toward it, then glanced at Iris with a curious look, "May I touch her? Is she safe?"
Knowing that it was a powerful beast, the Tabaxi guard was cautious.
"Go ahead," Iris smiled, gesturing for him to have a feel.
Rex remained silent, he didn't take part in this, Iris had mentioned earlier that the Tabaxi had a particular fondness for mutated animals—especially ones as beautiful as this. On the other hand, the Tabaxi took off his glove and used his hand to go along the beast's back.
He closed his eyes, feeling the power residing within.
Soon, he opened his eyes again, nodding eagerly with evidence of his admiration.
Upon hearing this—the Tabaxi guard turned to the direction Rex was talking about before he replied, "It's the Angels, they have been dealing with the nearest Order Beast, and the horde of mutated animals that were set to hit us tomorrow"
Almost instantly, Rex and Iris exchanged a complicated look.
Just as expected and feared, the Angels had made contact with the Zahara Consortium.
And since they were sending some of them to deal with the surroundings—it was safe to say that the Angels also had already made a deal. Rex didn't know exactly what the deal was but he was quite sure that it was in exchange for having access to the Saltura Bridge.
Shit, what are the Demons doing? How can they be this reckless?
Other than the Saltura Bridge, the Angels couldn't cross over the massive crack.
Going around it would make them confront the Demons head on so this was their only way.
But the Demons were too busy battling that they forgot about this strategic point.
Reaching the main gate, the Tabaxi guard signaled to the other guards to open the gate.
All of the Supernaturals inside the translucent path were looking at them, from the side, they were quite shocked to see Rex—and Iris outside. Unlike the other Supernaturals way behind, the ones near the gate weren't shocked because they were being escorted directly.
Instead, their shock came from something else.
Rex could tell that but he didn't know what these Supernaturals were shocked about.
As they waited, Iris frowned and tugged Rex's clothes.
"It's getting heavier here" She whispered.
"Yes," Rex nodded as he also thought of the same thing. "I can feel it too"
Compared to when they were on the rock formations earlier, the gravity here was deadly.
Around ten times the normal pressure which was capable of making the weary.
Glancing over to the cliff below Saltura Bridge ahead that stretched endlessly, Rex used the System's scanning feature again to answer the questions looming, inside his mind. And as it turns out, the Gravitational Rift played a huge part here.
Unlike the areas Rex had encountered, the Gravitational Rift here was exposed.
It seemed it was at the base of the cliff—causing this violent gravitational phenomenon.
Knowing that—the answer to the question that bothered Rex the most became clear.
Everyone said that the Saltura Bridge was the only path to cross over from the other side to this side, but he didn't understand what stopped other Supernatural races—from flying over the cliff.
Angels have wings, they could easily fly instead of going through the Saltura Bridge.
Now he realized that they simply couldn't.
Due to the Gravitational Rift at the base of the cliff, they would be pulled down hard.
Naturally, as they were pulled down, the gravity became stronger, the closer they became to the Gravitational Rift. Not even ninth-rank realm could survive the fall—they would be turned into mush upon impact.
Soon enough, Rex was escorted into a towering building.
Both of them entered and were escorted to the fifth floor which was some sort of an office.
A male Tabaxi in a regal robe sat there, counting gleaming elemental stones.
Signaling for Rex and Iris to wait for a moment, the guard went over to the male Tabaxi.
He leaned in to whisper something before turning around and leaving the room.
Rex and Iris watched as the door was closed before focusing back on the male Tabaxi.
"My name is Kazzir—and I am the commander tasked on duty here," the male Tabaxi, Kazzir introduced with a nonchalant tone. "I'm above everyone you see along the way, only answer to Master Serevan and Mistress Serevia"
Upon hearing this, Rex frowned, "Commander? I think there has been a mistake"
Just as he said that Kazzir put down the elemental stones and turned to look at Rex.
He finally made eye contact for the first time since they entered.
"No, I'm afraid there's no mistake," Kazzir replied in monotone. "So, which brand of forces did you two come from?"
