Dragon King's Harem Chapter 308. Impolite IV
"A memento?" I raised an eyebrow, honestly puzzled. "Like jewelry?" I asked, needing a bit of clarity since this was totally out of left field. I mean, I’ve been the Dragon King for a while, and nobody who wasn’t tangled up in some political game had ever straight-up asked me for a keepsake. Super weird, especially coming from someone I hardly knew.
Evelyn seemed to catch on to my confusion and backpedaled a bit. "No, it doesn't have to be that. Anything's fine," she said, her tone kind of self-deprecating, like she didn't want to make a big deal out of it.
I hummed thoughtfully, weighing what I could give her. We were just winging this meeting, and I wasn't exactly carrying around fancy gifts. "Hmm," I mused aloud, then hit on an idea. "Okay, how about I get Eir to send something nice your way?" I was trying to wrap this up smoothly.
But Evelyn wasn't ready to drop it. She stepped closer, then seemed to think better of it and stepped back. "No," she corrected softly, "anything you're using now will do. Even your hair," she added, which definitely threw me for a loop.
'Hair?' I thought, completely baffled. Was she collecting it for some witchy ritual? Unsure of her angle, I decided to go with something a bit less... personal. I plucked a button from my shirt and handed it to her.
Choosing a shirt button over something from my blazer, which was decked out with the Draconis crest, seemed like a good call. No need to complicate things with heavy symbolism. The recording crystal had everything on tape, so it was clear I wasn't up to any funny business during our weird little meeting.
What she really wanted was to tell the Dragon King how she felt—that she had fallen for him. But with the recording crystal capturing every word, she couldn’t risk it. Too much was at stake, not just her heart but potential political fallout too.
So she settled for the button—a discreet token of their encounter, something to hold onto. A little piece of him to carry with her as a reminder of what could never be.
To everyone else, Evelyn might be just a pawn in their political games, another royal asset to be traded in marriage. But those small moments with the Dragon King had sparked something in her, a flame of hope, however faint.
