Chapter 165 East 2 Dormitory
Qiu Huoming raised his wrist and looked at his watch. It was almost 10 o'clock. He touched his stomach and decided that he could still bear it, so he decided to go in and take a look first.
He walked quickly inside, and not far away he saw the library on the right. There was a sign at the door that read: "New students, please go forward from here."
He followed the instructions and walked to the gymnasium behind the library. A banner had been hung at the entrance of the gymnasium: "Warmly welcome new students."
He looked at the tightly closed door under the banner and fell into deep thought. In the end, he had arrived too early.
Today is the 27th, and there are still 4 and a half days left until the earliest time for new students to report.
"Hey, classmate, are you here to report?" A voice came over. The Mandarin was not standard, but it didn't sound like a Guangzhou accent.
Qiu Huoming turned his head in the direction of the voice and saw a thin middle-aged man walking on the path next to him. He was wearing dark blue straight pants under a white shirt and looked very gentle.
"You are a teacher in the school, right? I am a freshman here to report, and I am here early." Qiu Huoming explained.
"You speak Mandarin well, you are not a local, right?" asked the middle-aged man.
"Yes, I'm from another province. The journey was very smooth. I wasn't delayed at all. In fact, I arrived early..."
"Then I understand. These days, it's hard to predict the time on the road. So, let me take you to the Academic Affairs Office first. They have someone on duty..."
Qiu Huoming was overjoyed, "Thank you, teacher. My name is Qiu Huoming. What's your name, teacher?"
"Qiu Huoming, this name sounds familiar..." He thought for a moment and then stopped talking.
"Let's go, just call me Teacher Xu..."
"Okay, thank you, Teacher Xu." Qiu Huoming followed happily.
They went back to the original road, turned a corner, walked along the main road in the middle, and soon arrived in front of an imposing building.
Teacher Xu walked in and walked along the corridor into an office, and at the same time raised his voice: "Lao Luo, there is a new student here, from another province, do you think you should help the boy first?"
Qiu Huoming followed him in.
A slightly plump man wearing glasses in the office looked up and looked past Teacher Xu at Qiu Huoming, "Oh, you're a handsome guy..." His voice was typical Yangcheng Mandarin, which sounded particularly cordial to Qiu Huoming's ears.
He turned around and pulled out a large stack of documents from the filing cabinet behind him.
"Handsome boy, what's your name? Which department are you from? Let me see your admission letter..."
Qiu Huoming put down the guitar in his hand, opened his backpack, took out his notice, grain and oil relationship, household registration transfer and other information from the interlayer, handed it to Teacher Luo, and responded: "Hello, Teacher Luo, my name is Qiu Huoming, from the Radio Department..."
Teacher Luo slapped his thigh, pointed at Teacher Xu and laughed, "This is your fault. You had a quarrel with someone earlier this month. Don't you remember?"
Teacher Xu suddenly realized. He glanced at the confused Qiu Huoming and smiled, "Good that you're here. You came a long time ago. Lao Luo, hurry up and register him. Also, get his student ID, food and oil relationship, and household registration all at once!"
Teacher Luo glared at Teacher Xu, "Are you asking me to do something special again?" He turned to look at Qiu Huoming and asked helplessly, "Did you bring the photo?"
"I brought it." Qiu Huoming took out four headshots from the envelope of the notice.
"Okay, put the things here first. I'll give you a list. Go and check in first, and come back this afternoon to get the documents." He looked at Teacher Xu and said, "I'm expediting it..."
Teacher Xu smiled and took out a pack of cigarettes from his pocket, took out one and threw it to him, "I know, I appreciate it..."
A moment later, Qiu Huoming received an accommodation notice. He took it and took a look. It was Room 202, East .
"Xiao Qiu, come on, I'll take you to the dormitory." Teacher Xu said with a smile.
Qiu Huoming was flattered, "Thank you, Mr. Xu, thank you for your trouble."
"Hey, these troubles are sweet to him..." Lao Luo said with a smile in the local dialect. (Explanation: These troubles are sweet to him.)
Teacher Xu didn't care about Teacher Luo's ridicule at all, "Let's go."
He turned around and led the way out. Qiu Huoming quickly put on his bag and followed with his guitar.
After walking for a few minutes, we saw a lake in front of us, with sparkling water and beautiful greenery beside it. Teacher Xu walked along the circular road beside the lake and headed right. "This is the East Lake of our college. The dormitory I chose for you can see the lake..."
He smiled and said, "Lao Luo is really nice."
"I'm sorry to trouble you." Qiu Huoming said politely.
"No trouble, it's nothing, I'll just take a walk."
Qiu Huoming looked at the scorching sun in the sky and Teacher Xu's shirt which was getting wet continuously. This step was indeed very deliberate.
After going around the lake, several houses appeared in front of him. Teacher Xu walked directly to the second house. On the side of the gate was the dormitory management office. A young man greeted him and said, "Teacher Xu, are you taking care of students?"
Teacher Xu nodded and stretched out his hand in front of Qiu Huoming, "List."
"Oh." Qiu Huoming quickly took out the list from his bag.
Teacher Xu took it and passed it to the dormitory manager inside, "Xiao Chen, register him and give him a key to 202. Also, give him a set of bedding and other daily necessities. We have special care for people from other provinces..."
"Okay, Mr. Xu, wait a moment..." Dormitory Manager Chen spoke in a strong local Mandarin, sounding particularly honest. (Shi, wait a moment.)
He took out a registration form and asked Qiu Huoming to fill it out.
While Qiu Huoming was filling in the form, dormitory manager Chen came out from the back with a mosquito net, a set of light blue bedding and towels, and then a thermos and a washbasin.
Qiu Huoming filled out the form and handed it to him. Dormitory Manager Chen took a look at it, put it on the table, and took out a key from the wall next to it.
"Let's go, I'll take you up."
Qiu Huoming held the bedding and mosquito net, and dormitory manager Chen helped him carry the thermos and washbasin, and the three of them went up the stairs one after another.
Room 02 is the third room on the west side. The first room is an open space, which contains the public washroom.
Dormitory Manager Chen put down the thermos and opened the door.
Qiu Huoming followed him in.
This dormitory has three bunk beds in total. It looks quite tidy and has a window that allows you to directly see the lake not far ahead.
"Choose a bed for yourself. The key is on the door. If you have any problems, come and find me..." Dormitory Manager Chen said, and then said hello to Teacher Xu, and then walked out the door and back.
Qiu Huoming brought all the things in, turned around and looked at Teacher Xu, "Teacher Xu, I can do it myself from now on, thank you."
"Okay, I'll be leaving first. As for food, the big cafeteria is closed due to the summer vacation, but there are small cafeterias. Bring your national food coupons and go out and ask around."
"Okay." Qiu Huoming saw him out the door and then quickly returned to the dormitory. He looked at the three bunk beds in front of him. There was a table next to each bed and six simple wall cabinets near the door.
He directly chose the lower bunk bed by the window. The weather in Guangzhou is hot, and it is cooler by the window. He opened the window and saw nice greenery outside. After a while, his arm was bitten by a mosquito. No wonder, they also gave him a mosquito net.
There was a broom and dustpan at the door. He swept the floor first, then took the washbasin to the public water room to get water. There was a simple partition at the innermost side of the water room, and inside the partition was the shower room. This shower room did not have a hot water pipe, and it was obviously just ordinary cold water.
Qiu Huoming fetched the water, returned to the dormitory, took out an old towel from his bag as a rag, and carefully wiped the bed, tables and chairs. Then he made the bedding and hung the mosquito net neatly.
He didn't have many clothes, so he used a small space in the closet. He put the few books Professor Li gave him on his desk and then looked around. There was nothing to do. He would buy some daily necessities later and then he could officially move in.
He touched his stomach and this time he was really hungry.
He took out all the money from his backpack, took out a few loose coins, and took out a few food coupons. He put the rest in a notebook and put it in the only locked drawer of the desk.
He then took the water in the basin to the bathroom and poured it out, and at the same time rinsed his hair and wiped his face.
Back in the dormitory, he dried his hair with the new towel he was given.
I hung the drawer key together with the front door key.
He locked the door, put the key into the pocket of his trousers, and then walked out.
When he entered the school gate, he saw someone selling clay pot rice at the school gate. After going downstairs, he looked towards the duty room and saw that the dormitory manager Chen was not there. He probably went out to eat.
He didn't need to say hello and walked quickly towards the school gate.
The strong sun at noon shone on his body, and there was a breeze blowing in the hot air. Fortunately, his hair was still wet, bringing a hint of coolness.
It was very quiet around him, with only the wind blowing across his cheeks and the occasional leaf falling on the path ahead.
He looked at the unique Lingnan buildings around him, and the corners of his mouth curled up. He was a college student...
After leaving the school gate, there are several food stalls lined up in a row not far away, among which is the small clay pot rice shop that he had previously taken a fancy to.
There are several coal stoves with clay pots on them at the door of the shop. Before people get close, they can already smell the burnt aroma of the rice crust and the fragrance of bacon.
He swallowed and walked over quickly.
There were three tables inside, all of which had changed color due to the smoke from the fireworks. On one of the tables, two young men were sitting, eating hard.
The fat black man standing by the stove stood up and said, "Handsome boy, what do you want to eat?"
"Boss, give me a serving of sausage rice..." Qiu Huoming looked at the simple menu hanging on the wall, ordered the food, paid the bill, and walked inside.
He sat down and looked around with interest. He still needed to hide the fact that he could speak "vernacular". After three months or half a year, he could speak it with confidence...
He spent two years in Hong Kong as an exchange student, so ordinary Cantonese was not a problem for him.
This is also one of the reasons why he has the confidence to come to Guangzhou.
After a while, the boss came over with a cardboard, holding the casserole in his hand and handed it over, "Be careful, it's hot..."
The casserole was placed on the table. The boss took a rag and opened the lid, then poured a handful of soy sauce on it. Smoke filled the air and the aroma filled the air. He turned around and brought a bowl of traditional soup from the side and placed it next to the clay pot rice.
Qiu Huoming took a spoon and stirred it a few times. The rice at the bottom of the clay pot rice had already crusted over. The top of the rice was covered with bacon and shredded ginger. Two pieces of Chinese cabbage lay on each side of the bacon. The soy sauce dyed the rice, making it shiny.
After he mixed it, he put a mouthful of the rice wrapped in bacon into his mouth while it was still hot and chewed for a while. The rice grains were soaked in oil, and with the salty and fragrant bacon, he felt really satisfied after taking one bite.
After eating several mouthfuls in succession, he picked up the soup bowl and took a sip. This was a water chestnut, carrot and pig lung soup, which had a slightly sweet taste and was very refreshing.
While we were eating, a young girl wearing a straw hat and a purple dress came in. She looked inside and found an empty seat, and a look of joy appeared on her face.
"Yes, boss. I'd like a bowl of cured pork rice." Her voice was soft, and just listening to it was very pleasant. Not only Qiu Huoming, but also the other two diners looked up.
The doorway was backlit, so she wasn't very clear because of her straw hat, but she was tall and looked different from the average girl in Guangzhou.
Qiu Huoming withdrew his gaze and continued to eat his meal with big mouthfuls.
After a while, the girl came in and sat directly in front of the only empty table. She turned her back to Qiu Huoming, took off her straw hat and fanned herself constantly.
Looking from here, her hair is very long, with slightly curled ends tied into a low ponytail. Her hair is black and shiny, and her exposed neck is white and slender.
Qiu Huoming picked up the bowl of soup and was about to finish it in one breath when he heard a tall and thin young man among the two diners exclaim, "Wow, what a beautiful girl!"
Another person shouted, "She looks like a star..."
The tall and thin young man tidied his hair and suddenly stood up. He walked towards the girl and said, "Beautiful girl, what's your name? Why don't we make friends..."
"Sorry, I'm not interested!" The girl's voice was a little unhappy.
The tall and thin young man showed a hint of embarrassment on his face. He had a handsome appearance and was tall, so he should be the type that girls like.
The guy behind him has a typical Guangzhou local look: short, with thick eyebrows and big eyes, but thick lips and a slightly collapsed nose.
The boss stood at the door watching the clay pot rice cooking. His eyes moved towards the room. He didn't pay much attention to what was happening inside. The young man was just trying to strike up a conversation with him.
He withdrew his gaze and continued to stare at the stove.
The short young man sneered, "Jialiang, no, didn't you say there is no woman you can't handle..."
Tan Jialiang smiled and half squatted down. "Beautiful girl, why don't you wait until you finish your meal, I will treat you to a sweet drink. I really want to make friends with you. Let me introduce myself. I am a sophomore student at this university. My name is Tan Jialiang..."
He is good-looking and a serious college student, so he is still very successful in this era.
"I'm telling you, I'm not interested in making friends with you, please don't stop me from eating, please!" The girl's voice was very firm, not giving him a chance.
Tan Jialiang's smile gradually froze. He glanced at the girl, turned around and said to his companions who were sitting there watching the fun, "Come on, why are you still sitting here..."
Seeing that there was no trouble, Qiu Huoming drank the soup in the bowl in one breath, then pushed the bowl away and stood up.

Let me explain the dialect. In 1982, most people in Guangzhou did not speak Mandarin. Even around the millennium, people spoke with a strong local accent. Huozi had just arrived in Guangzhou, so there were some local dialects. As for the word count, I wrote the translation in the author's words before. I don't care much about the word count. Later, some readers said that reading it this way would interrupt the plot, so I tried to put the annotations directly at the end. It seems that it is still not suitable.
Later on, I will change the text to Mandarin and write the dialogues directly.
