Chapter 54 The Chase
Chapter 54 The Chase
Xu Yan and her group managed to escape the factory with all their might. Just as they caught their breath, they saw a figure ahead.
The figure slowly approached; it turned out to be Xiao Li, the colleague who had gone missing earlier.
Xiao Li looked terrified, muttering repeatedly, "Don't go back, it's full of monsters." Everyone crowded around to ask what was going on, but Xiao Li just shook his head.
Just then, a deep roar came from the direction of the factory.
Xu Yan shouted, "Oh no, we have to get out of here right away!" But there was only one narrow path leading to a dark forest.
As everyone hesitated, the voice grew closer and closer.
Xu Yan gritted her teeth: "Going into the woods is better than waiting to die here." So everyone followed her and rushed into the woods.
A misty fog filled the woods, creating an eerie and terrifying atmosphere.
Suddenly, someone exclaimed in surprise, as strange symbols appeared at their feet, flashing with a faint light.
Before anyone could figure out what was happening, the surrounding trees seemed to come alive and stretched out their branches to tightly entwine them.
Xu Yan struggled desperately, and in her despair, a bright light flashed, and all the branches instantly retracted. A person appeared before her and said coldly, "You have trespassed into a place you should not have entered."
That was Huan Yuechu, standing there with a cold expression.
Xu Yan was both wary and afraid. She hadn't expected to end up in this strange place after such a harrowing experience.
Looking at Huan Yuechu who had suddenly appeared here, Xiao Yichen pondered to himself that he had heard Huan Yuechu was both righteous and evil, and wondered what his purpose was in appearing here.
Upon seeing Huan Yuechu, Chongyang excitedly stepped forward and exclaimed, "Sister Yuechu, did you come here specifically to rescue us?"
Huan Yuechu glanced at Chongyang and said indifferently, "I'm just passing through. This is not a place you should be venturing into."
Xu Yan stepped forward. "Anyway, thank you for your help, boss lady. But we didn't mean to wander in here. There were monsters in the factory behind us, and we stumbled in here by mistake while trying to escape."
Huan Yuechu raised an eyebrow slightly. "Monsters? This factory behind us is no ordinary place; it hides many secret experiments. Those so-called monsters are probably man-made." Everyone was shocked upon hearing this.
Xiao Yichen asked, "Do you know who's behind this?"
Huan Yuechu sneered, "Hmph, the forces behind this are too complex for you to handle. But since you've already gotten involved, don't expect to get away easily. Come with me, and at least for now, I can guarantee your safety."
The group exchanged bewildered glances, unsure whether to believe her. But then, another roar erupted behind them, and it seemed even more monsters were approaching.
Xu Yan made up her mind, "Now that things have come to this, I'll go with the boss lady."
So everyone followed Huan Yuechu deeper into the forest. The fog grew thicker and thicker, and the road ahead was full of unknowns.
Huan Yuechu slowly spoke, "You don't need to be nervous, I'm not here to cause trouble. I wanted to stop Ali's crazy behavior, but I was too late. However, there's a bigger conspiracy behind this incident." Xu Yan looked at her suspiciously.
Huan Yuechu continued, "There's a mysterious force behind this gene experiment project, and Ali is just a pawn. They're trying to rule the world by controlling genes." Xu Yan was shocked.
As they walked, everyone digested the astonishing news Huan Yuechu had shared. Xiao Yichen couldn't help but ask, "So, where are we going now?"
Huan Yuechu replied, "Let's go find someone; perhaps he can give us some clues."
After passing through thick fog, they arrived at a dilapidated hut.
Huan Yue stepped forward and knocked on the door. An old man poked his head out.
Upon seeing Huan Yuechu, the old man smiled broadly and was about to call out, "Ancestor..." but Huan Yuechu glanced at him, and the old man changed his words, "Old friend, you've finally arrived."
After saying that, he went inside and handed a document to Huan Yuechu. “This is some information I obtained through secret investigation. It mentions an organization called ‘Dark Star,’ which is very likely the mastermind behind it all.”
Huan Yuechu flipped through the documents, her brows furrowed.
Just then, a commotion arose outside.
Huan Yuechu sensed something was wrong and whispered, "Oh no, they're coming after us."
Everyone tensed up instantly. Xu Yan clenched her fists. "What do we do?"
Huan Yuechu remained calm and said, "Don't be afraid, there's a secret passage in this room." She then led everyone into the secret passage.
Huan Yuechu glanced back and said, "We'll settle this score with them sooner or later." Then she led the group away into the depths of the secret passage.
The secret passage was dark and damp, with only a few dim lamps barely illuminating the way. The group carefully followed Huan Yuechu forward.
After walking for an unknown amount of time, a glimmer of light appeared ahead.
Huan Yuechu quickened her pace and found herself in a valley after exiting the secret passage.
The valley is surrounded by strange flowers and plants that emit a faint fluorescent glow.
"It's safe here for now," Huan Yuechu said.
Chongyang looked around curiously, while Xu Yan vigilantly observed the surrounding movements.
Huan Yuechu carefully discerned the direction, then pointed in one direction and said, "If I remember correctly, if you keep walking in that direction, you'll find your way back. There's an inn there where you can rest for a while." Hearing this, everyone followed him.
However, they soon came to a thicket of thorny bushes.
Just as everyone was wondering how to get across, Huan Yuechu took out a delicate little knife from her pocket and with a gentle wave, the thorns seemed to come alive and automatically parted to make way for her.
The group successfully made it through the bushes, only to be attacked by a swarm of enormous flying insects.
These flying insects are the size of pigeons, and their eyes gleam with an eerie red light.
Xiao Yichen picked up a branch to drive the insects away, while Huan Yuechu formed hand seals and released a stream of air to disperse the flying insects.
As they continued forward, the outline of an inn began to appear faintly in the distance.
But just as they approached the inn, the ground suddenly sank, forming a series of large pits.
Huan Yuechu leaped up and, in mid-air, grabbed a vine and flung it at the group. With her help, everyone used the momentum to cross the potholes.
Finally, after they successfully arrived at the inn's entrance, everyone breathed a sigh of relief and went inside.
Upon entering the inn, a sense of antiquity permeated the air. The tables and chairs were placed crookedly, and cobwebs hung in the corners.
The innkeeper saw people come in, raised his eyelids, and said lazily, "Guests, are you here for a stay or for a meal?"
Huan Yue stepped forward and said, "Check in. Give us five rooms."
As the shopkeeper registered the documents, he muttered, "This place isn't safe. Make sure to lock the doors and windows at night."
After checking in, everyone went back to their rooms to rest.
In the middle of the night, Chongyang suddenly heard a melodious flute sound.
Curious, he opened the window and looked in the direction of the sound, only to see a white shadow moving in the backyard of the inn.
He was startled and was about to wake the others when the white figure floated to her window. It was a woman dressed in white, with an exquisitely beautiful face but sorrowful eyes.
"Brother, save me," the woman pleaded softly.
While Chongyang hesitated, Huan Yuechu suddenly appeared and struck the woman with a burst of spiritual energy.
The woman let out a sharp scream and instantly turned into a wisp of green smoke and disappeared.
