Chapter 4 Making a Plaque
Chapter 4 Making a Plaque
I arrived full of anticipation, but left the Tianshan road covered in snow, making it difficult to move an inch.
Time flies, and soon we arrived at the place where the plaque was to be made.
As soon as they arrived, Xiao Ping'an exclaimed excitedly, "Sister Yuechu, look! This is Master Zhang's shop, and his cooking is absolutely amazing!"
Just then, they bumped into an elderly woman who looked to be in her fifties. She exclaimed in surprise, "Ping An, what are you doing here? Shouldn't you be at home?"
"Grandma Li, don't worry, I'm fine. I just ran into Sister Yuechu who's making a signboard, so I brought her to see Grandpa Zhang." As Xiao Ping'an said this, he winked at me. It seems this is his first day earning money!
Grandma Li looked at Ping An with a kind face and gave me a casual smile. "Then come in quickly, I'll call your Grandpa Zhang out."
He then walked into the shop and shouted, "Old man, I have a job!"
I was momentarily at a loss as to how to address others. I am a thousand-year-old immortal herb, and others' entire lives are not even worth a fraction of mine. Oh well! When in Rome, do as the Romans do.
I led Xiao Ping'an into the shop, where we saw wood chips scattered everywhere, both messy and neat. The works in the cabinets on the walls were exquisite, and the calligraphic skills were profound. They were indeed good craftsmen.
"Young lady, what kind of signboard do you want to make?" An old man dressed in dark clothes, leaning on a cane, came out and asked with a smile in his eyes but a stern expression.
He then led us to the reception room, saying, "Please sit here." We sat down and chatted slowly. Grandpa Zhang poured me a cup of tea.
"Could you tell me what kind of place this sign is from? I'm curious because very few people use signs these days."
Before I could figure out what to say, Xiao Ping'an said anxiously, "Grandpa Zhang, the signboard is for the inn opposite the Xinhua Hotel."
I quickly chimed in, "Yes, that's the place Xiao Ping'an was talking about."
"Is the Time Inn reopening? Are you the new owner of the inn?" Grandpa Zhang asked with a surprised look.
I noticed that when Grandpa Zhang was talking about the Time Inn, the cup in his hand trembled slightly. If I weren't different from ordinary people, I might not have noticed. Does the Time Inn have some kind of secret?
Grandpa Zhang clearly knew about it, so I tentatively asked, "Grandpa Zhang, do you know about the Time Inn? Is there anything special about it?"
"Little girl, you don't need to call me Grandpa Zhang, I can't accept that. Just call me Zhang Yong!" Does this old man know my identity? Or have I been exposed? That's impossible! I'm just an ordinary person with a little bit of martial arts and magic.
I looked at him with a puzzled expression and said, "Why? I'm just a little girl now, it's only natural for me to call you Grandpa Zhang."
"Because the owners of Time Inn are all extraordinary people, I dare not act rashly. You should just call me Zhang Yong!" The old man said truthfully, seeing that I really didn't know anything about the inn.
It seems this inn certainly has a story! But that makes sense; if it didn't have some history, would the mysterious man be able to live so freely?
Thinking to myself, if I dared to call you that, I'd probably get beaten up or scolded in this world. You have to understand that this world values polite language. So, I'll call you Grandpa, and you can call me Yuechu. We don't need to be formal.
"Alright! At the beginning of the month, what kind of plaque do you want to make? The original plaque was made by my father's generation!" The old man said with a hint of pride amidst his compromise.
No wonder they have such good craftsmanship. The original plaque did look quite nice. If it hadn't broken into two pieces, I wouldn't have wanted to replace it.
Since the signboard is broken, it can't be used anymore; it's considered unlucky. "Keep the signboard as it is, and change the name to Phantom Inn. How much will it cost? I'll pay now! I'll come pick it up when it's finished."
The old man waved his hand dismissively and said, "No need to spend any money. Come and pick it up in a week."
“Old man, that won’t do. In our line of work, we believe in cause and effect. You know the reason behind it. Just name your price.”
The old man said regretfully, "Alright! Then just give me eight hundred yuan for the timber! I can't refuse anymore!"
I don't know what he's regretting. Could it be that he thinks I'll help him someday and he'll owe me a favor?
At that moment, I never imagined that one day I would have such a deep connection with this old man.
My heart was pounding; my money, I hadn't even had a chance to enjoy it before giving it away! But with a straight face, I said, "Grandpa, here's eight hundred yuan. Keep it safe. If there's nothing else, I'll take Xiao Ping'an home now!"
After I finished speaking, I took Xiao Ping'an's hand, stood up, and walked towards the door. The old man wanted to see me off, but I refused and asked him to stay.
After we left, a while later, Grandma Li came out. "Old man, did you reach an agreement? Why are you standing there like that?"
"It's done, the Time Inn has reopened! No, it's now called the Phantom Inn." The old man was lost in thought as he spoke of these things, then immediately snapped back to reality.
"It seems that young girl was quite something!" Grandma Li exclaimed after hearing this.
"Not just extraordinary, they are exceptional individuals. It seems that Jiangxin City is about to be in turmoil!"
Huan Yuechu left long ago and didn't hear any of this, otherwise she would have been curious again!
I escorted Xiao Ping'an to her doorstep, squatted down, and said to her, "Thank you for accompanying me around all night. This is the tip you promised." I then took out a hundred yuan and handed it to her.
Xiao Ping'an's face flushed, and she opened her mouth to say, "Sister Yuechu, you gave too much. I only helped with a small matter, so you don't need to give so much money."
This kid even knows to give too much; how sensible he is! But I can't take advantage of him. "This is the reward for Xiao Ping'an's hard work. Here, take the money and go home quickly. Don't let your parents worry about you!"
"Okay, thank you! Sister Yuechu."
I stood outside waving goodbye to Xiao Ping'an, and only left after watching him enter the house.
I found a secluded corner, walked through the wall back to my rented room, and collapsed on the bed thinking about how quickly the money was spent and how I had become penniless again!
Thinking of this, although I am a celestial herb with martial and magical powers, I cannot use my abilities indiscriminately. I must abide by the rules, otherwise I fear I will not live to see my tribulation. Moreover, I am a good citizen and must obey the law.
Looks like I'll have to go out and look for a job tomorrow. Not to mention making the inn bigger and stronger, I just need to support myself first.
Sigh! I haven't even seen a glimpse of the Seven Emotions Bracelet the mysterious man mentioned, so what's the point of the quest? Then I remembered the mysterious man told me to watch over the inn, so the item must be inside the inn.
As for the inn, I don't have the funds right now, so I can't open it at all. No wonder they say I have to rely on my own abilities.
Before, I only knew about cultivation and didn't understand the mundane things like firewood, rice, oil, salt, soy sauce, vinegar, and tea. After coming to this world, I realized that survival is not easy. I'm sorry to trouble the immortal herb!
I don't want to think about it anymore, I'm going to close my eyes and go to sleep!
There was a knocking sound at the door, and I was just about to get up to open it.
A loud voice came from outside the door, "Huan Yuechu, rent is due tomorrow! If you don't pay, move out now, there are other people waiting to move in!"
After saying that, he knocked on another door, without needing to reply at all.
