Chapter 199 199: The Tentacles of Davy Jones’ Power Reach into the New World
Chapter 199 199: The Tentacles of Davy Jones’ Power Reach into the New World
Baron Tamago's heart tensed. He knew Big Mom's temper all too well — and yes, it was entirely possible.
If Big Mom's wrath were to descend upon them, even Snack wouldn't be able to withstand it.
When Big Mom made a move, it was never merely punishment — it concerned the very lifespans of everyone in the unit.
Only now did Baron Tamago understand Snack's true concern.
He had no choice but to act this way.
In truth, Snack himself was thinking of something else.
He wasn't so delusional as to think he could single-handedly defeat both Davy Jones and Crocodile at once.
One was a pirate powerful enough to topple a Warlord of the Sea.
The other, a former Warlord himself — neither was an easy opponent.
But Snack believed that, under the banner of a Yonko like Big Mom, simply raising her flag should be enough to make them retreat.
In the New World, even Kaido and Red-Hair, and sometimes even the Navy itself, would show deference to Big Mom's might.
So what right did a fledgling pirate crew like the Davy Jones Pirates have to defy them?
Impossible.
With his mind made up, Snack ordered both ships to approach the island.
The fjord was riddled with hidden reefs, so the ships advanced cautiously — but soon docked without incident.
Snack instantly saw what that meant, and his contempt only deepened.
"So they don't even have enough manpower to guard their own shore?
And they call this claiming territory?"
Snack led his men ashore. Before long, they followed the sandy path toward a pile of stacked stones, where a tattered pirate flag fluttered.
Upon it was emblazoned a monstrous creature covered in tentacles — the flag of the Davy Jones Pirates.
At the base of the stone mound sat a severed human head, buzzing with flies.
Baron Tamago took one look and immediately recognized it.
"That's the pirate Brownbeard. His bounty was 80.06 million.
Looks like his crew became the Davy Jones Pirates' first prey."
The Brownbeard Pirates had a bit of fame in the New World — nothing major, but not insignificant either.
Tamago remembered the man mainly because his nickname echoed Whitebeard and Blackbeard.
It seemed the Brownbeard Pirates had tried to seize this island after Whitebeard's death, only to be swiftly crushed by Davy Jones' forces.
But defeating Brownbeard didn't prove much.
Snack, Tamago, and Pekoms each began sizing up what kind of strength Davy Jones' crew might actually possess.
"They're here," Snack muttered.
His Kenbunshoku Haki had picked up movement.
"Not many of them… but a few strong presences among them."
After his return to the New World, Crocodile quickly set his sights on the surrounding islands.
He had boasted before Captain Davy Jones — and now, he intended to deliver.
Thunder-filled islands like Raijin Island were useless to claim; instead, he sought lands suitable for human habitation.
Before long, he captured a tropical island and renamed it Horror Ghost Island, after Captain Davy Jones' fabled black ship.
This became the first island under Davy Jones' control in the New World — a vital foothold, and one of symbolic importance.
The island's natives were weak, so Crocodile faced little resistance during the takeover.
Next came two problems: manpower and supplies.
These constraints limited his ability to expand the Davy Jones' sphere of influence. For now, he focused on solidifying control of this island.
Two weeks after the Paramount War, Crocodile had fully secured Terror Ghost Island and recruited over a hundred men.
Feeling ready to reach further, he targeted the nearest island — once Whitebeard's territory, now seized by the Brownbeard Pirates.
It was no random choice.
The Brownbeard Pirates were brutal, having slaughtered countless islanders. Winning over the local populace would be easy.
Crocodile didn't send his full force — instead, he dispatched a vanguard unit led by Trafalgar Law, along with Buggy, Perona, Porche, and twenty others.
Law's team performed flawlessly. Within days, they had annihilated the Brownbeard Pirates and pacified the island's population under Davy Jones' banner.
Yet, barely two days later, Law received word from a scout — two pirate ships were approaching.
Immediately, Law gathered Buggy, Perona, Porche, and a squad to investigate.
When they saw the black sails with the white skull, Buggy's face transformed — his natural gift for overacting on full display.
From calm… to curious… to confused… to horrified. His mouth hung open in disbelief — but Perona spoke first.
"It's Big Mom's ships!" she gasped, covering her mouth.
"What is Big Mom doing here?"
Porche, too, was stunned.
Only Law looked unsurprised.
During their previous talks — both among himself, Crocodile, and Kuro, and through Den Den Mushi reports to Davy Jones on Fish-Man Island — they had already anticipated this.
Everyone knew Big Mom had long coveted Fish-Man Island.
The only thing that had stopped her was Whitebeard's protection.
Now that Whitebeard was gone and his territories were being devoured, it was only natural Big Mom would move to claim Fish-Man Island next.
With that, Law had already guessed their purpose.
And just then, the Fried Minister's Unit marched up — the two groups met face to face.
Snack overheard Perona's exclamation, sensing the waves of fear rolling off Buggy, Perona, Porche, and their men.
He wasn't surprised — in fact, he was satisfied.
Yes. Be afraid.
This is the proper attitude when standing before us.
In the New World, Big Mom's flag was a weapon unto itself.
Every pirate beneath the Yonko feared her — even Donquixote Doflamingo, the "Heavenly Yaksha," showed respect.
And compared to Doflamingo's powerful Donquixote Family, which ruled Dressrosa for eight long years, what was this newly risen Davy Jones crew?
Surely they wouldn't dare defy the might of Big Mom.
Even the man in the spotted hat — clearly the leader — couldn't hide the nervous tension in his aura.
Snack smiled, pleased, and spoke first:
"Good. Since you already know who we are, I'll make this simple.
I'm giving you one day to vacate this island.
As of now, it belongs to Big Mom."
It wasn't exactly an act of insubordination on his part. Big Mom had entrusted him with subduing Fish-Man Island, and the surrounding satellite islands naturally fell under his authority.
If he couldn't secure a safe and direct trade route between Fish-Man Island and Totland, it might lead to rebellion — and if that happened, Big Mom would be furious.
She'd blame Snack for his failure — and he could lose not only her favor, but even his seat among the Sweet Commanders.
Many of Big Mom's children coveted that position. Snack couldn't afford to slip.
Buggy tugged anxiously on Law's orange hood.
"You heard him, Law! We can't fight Big Mom!
Let's get out of here — we only have one day!"
But Law shook his head.
"Have you forgotten whose subordinates we are?
Why should we take orders from Big Mom's lackeys?"
There was a reason Law had been made commander of Davy Jones' expeditionary force — he could stay calm when others panicked.
Buggy was aghast.
"That's Big Mom we're talking about! Did you forget how Whitebeard fought the Navy at Marineford?
Big Mom's just as terrifying as he was!"
He meant that even if the enemy's numbers seemed small, their true strength — and the army behind them — was immense.
Big Mom herself was every bit the monster Whitebeard had been.
Crossing her would mean annihilation — once her fleets came swarming in, Davy Jones' vanguard would be torn apart.
And if Big Mom herself appeared… it would be
the end.
Perona clearly agreed, her black pearl eyes full of worry as she gazed at Law — hoping he wouldn't act recklessly.
But Law wasn't acting on emotion.
He had already made up his mind.
