Chapter 121: The truth will eventually be revealed
Xu Qing often found it hard to keep up with Jiang He’s thought process.
He tilted his head slightly to look at her, puzzled. Was she seeking praise? Celebrating something? Or maybe she just felt liberated after finally clearing her debt?
The motive was important—it would give him insight into her current mindset. If she were from modern times, this might be some kind of hint. But with Jiang He...
As these thoughts whirled through his mind in a matter of moments, Xu Qing had already turned halfway and gently hugged her. Noticing that Jiang He didn’t push him away like she used to, his heart soared with joy. He kept his hands carefully still, afraid of provoking her.
It all started because he couldn’t control his hands earlier and got them pinned by Jiang He.
Mid-kiss, he sensed something was off. Pulling back slightly with a strange expression, he glanced at her hands.
“What are you doing?”
“I’m... copying you,” Jiang He said.
Xu Qing’s breath caught in his chest. What was there to touch on a man’s chest?
Coincidentally, Jiang He had been pondering this very question since their fishing trip earlier that day. Now she was testing it out.
The answer? Not much.
Jiang He didn’t let him continue. Though it was different from their earlier interactions—her mind wasn’t blank, and she actually enjoyed the intimacy—she didn’t indulge.
“Thank you.”
“For what?” Xu Qing asked.
“For not giving up on me. Even when I held a sword to your throat, suspecting you of poisoning me. And for teaching me how to make a living here.”
“Well, you’re good-looking.”
Xu Qing glanced at her rosy lips and smiled, turning back to his computer. Her lips were soft, like they could melt.
“I’m good-looking... I...” Jiang He faltered, unsure how to respond.
How could someone be so blunt? Couldn’t he pretend to be righteous, like he was just helping her out of justice?@@@@
“Back then, I made it clear: taking you in was risky. Your violence, or the danger of being discovered, could have caused trouble. I even told you you could leave if you wanted to. It would’ve been less hassle for me.”
After watching her handle several transactions without issue, Xu Qing felt reassured. His gaze shifted from the computer screen to Jiang He’s face. Her focused expression was endearing, making him want to tease her.
“Is sitting cross-legged comfortable?” he asked.
“Mm-hmm.” Jiang He nodded absentmindedly.
“Looks like a strange position... take your socks off.”
Xu Qing tugged at her cotton socks experimentally. Lost in her excitement about the ten-yuan payments, Jiang He absentmindedly complied, letting him remove her socks before resuming her trading.
“Your feet are so smooth, not like your hands with all those calluses...”
“Ah!” Jiang He flinched, nearly kicking him. “Why are you touching my feet?!”
“I was just curious...”
The smooth texture had Xu Qing’s thoughts drifting, but he quickly suppressed the urge to touch them again. He carried her socks to the balcony to wash them.
“What are you doing?” Jiang He asked nervously, her attention split between the screen and Xu Qing. The sensation of him touching her foot lingered, and now seeing him take her socks away made her more tense.
“Washing them, obviously,” Xu Qing replied.
“I can wash them myself!”
“Focus on selling coins. Washing socks is no big deal. Besides, it’s cold out, and washing powder is harsh on the hands. I’m a man—it doesn’t matter for me. But you need to take care of your hands.”
Jiang He’s face turned beet red. “I... I...”
“You’re a woman, and I’m your man,” Xu Qing added with a teasing grin.
“I... I...”
Jiang He could face down swords and bloodshed without flinching, but Xu Qing’s words left her flustered to the point of tears.
“Xu Qing!”
“Yeah, I’m here.”
“...”
