Chapter 202: Calligraphy
Chapter 202: Calligraphy
Rose stood motionless for several long moments after Gladys' abrupt departure, her mind reeling as she processed the dire implications of what had just occurred.
Gladys, her own mother, had reacted with thinly-veiled trepidation upon feeling the reverberations of Rose's unleashed psychic abilities. As if she sensed something ominous, something to be feared, in the supernatural forces her daughter had tapped into.
A ghost of remembered words echoed in Rose's mind from years past - Gladys' firm warnings about the consequences of delving too recklessly into the more primal aspects of their vampiric power. At the time, Rose had brushed off such concerns as overprotective fretting. But now....
Now, she couldn't help but wonder if there was some kernel of truth to her mother's apprehensions after all. Something had caused a very visceral reaction in Gladys, something that clearly unnerved the normally unflappable woman.
The thought made Rose's chest constrict with a confusing blend of emotions. Had she crossed some unseen line in the workings of her kind? Was her desperation to reestablish contact with her allies outside these castle walls driving her to meddle with forces better left untapped?
After all, the debilitating psychic backlash Rose had experienced was unlike anything she'd encountered before. It spoke to the presence of incredibly powerful telepathic dampeners and wards surrounding this place - wards which should not exist, at least to her knowledge.
Which begged the terrifying question - who had erected such formidable psychic barriers, and to what sinister purpose? The implications seemed to stretch out in infinite, bleak directions that Rose dared not linger on.
Drawing a steadying breath, the young vampire attempted to regain her equilibrium and think through this newest crisis with some semblance of rational focus. Clearly, her efforts to remain in discreet contact with her allies outside were being systematically blocked by unknown forces.
She would not allow any harm to come to this innocent miracle growing inside her, she resolved feverishly. Not from the vampire elite, not from anyone. If it meant going on the run from this very place to ensure her child's safety, then so be it. They would flee into the night without a second thought.
Drawing a shuddering breath, Rose viciously blinked away the tears blurring her sight. She had to focus, had to analyze this situation with all the strategic brilliance she could muster. Panicking would only make her sloppy and heedless at a time when she needed to be sharper than ever before.
Picking up the quill once more with a steadier hand, Rose continued drafting her coded missive to Reggie with renewed urgency. She poured every ounce of her thoughts and suspicions onto the vellum, fresh inkblots pockmarking the parchment as her quill flew frantically.
By the time she was finished, Rose had managed to compact the entirety of her current crisis into a dense cluster of innocuous-looking verses and metaphors. To any who might chance to intercept the words, it would appear no more than a strange, rambling piece of poetry.
Only those who knew the cipher would comprehend the true, terrifying message contained within – a plea for immediate evacuation before it was too late.
Rose could only pray that her missive would make it safely into Reggie's hands without interception. For she feared this newly perilous game might have life or death stakes, whether for herself or her unborn child.
As the final drying drops of ink glistened ominously on the vellum, Rose felt dread congealing like a leaden weight in the pit of her stomach. The path forward had never seemed so cloaked in looming shadows and threats, both visible and unseen.
But she knew one thing beyond any shadow of doubt - she would cut through those shadows with fang and claw if needed to safeguard her future, her family, her very existence.
Even if it meant going to war against the darkness seeping like an oily poison through her former home.
