Chapter 59 7:30: Observing in Secret
Spider-Man is dodging, and the webs are emitting a faint burnt smell due to the high temperature. Fortunately, it's only the webs that are burning, not him.
But then again, what else could he do but dodge? He was bitten by a mutated spider, not fallen into lava. Peter Parker didn't have the ability to withstand high temperatures—even if he did, the Human Torch's temperature of several thousand or even tens of thousands of degrees was beyond his defense range, especially since this guy still thought he was Mysterio.
"Damn Mysterio! You're dead! I'm going to roast you alive!"
"Johnny, I really want to know what Mysterio told you—" Peter flipped over, his spiderwebs catching onto a distant fire escape, pulling him away from the flames. "—But I guess you won't tell me, right?"
With graceful aerial dodges, Peter swung his webs between skyscrapers, relying not only on his self-made sonar system but also, as a friendly neighbor of New York, possessing a kind of muscle memory for the streets and buildings of Manhattan, allowing him to swing back and forth smoothly and flawlessly. In comparison, the Human Torch seemed to lose control several times and crash into walls.
Fortunately, the Human Torch didn't last long. Another Mysterio appeared out of nowhere and grabbed him, while Tony Stark's voice came through his suit's communication channel: "Alright, kid, I'll take care of this one."
"Mr. Stark, I've thought of something—"
"Go ahead and do it! I need to go calm this kid down!"
Iron Man, having caught the Human Torch, finally released his speed limit and flew at full speed into the sky. The holographic interface displayed the current temperature and the damage to the armor. The temperature was thousands of degrees Celsius, and even the latest Iron Man armor could not withstand it for long.
[Sir, the armor is about to reach its overheat limit.]
"I'm calculating!"
Ignoring the Human Torch's unrestrained profanity, Tony broke through the limits of darkness and entered the normal daylight. The Human Torch, whom Tony was holding, gradually died down due to the lack of oxygen at high altitude, and looked at Iron Man holding him helplessly.
"Should I tell Susan that you almost roasted Spider-Man?"
"No, no, no, no, please don't tell my sister." The Human Torch waved his hands repeatedly. "She'll give me a good beating. Please, Stark, I know you two are close."
After flying a little lower, Iron Man released him, and the rekindled Human Torch heard a blunt reprimand: "Then find a place to stay put. Right now, the last thing Manhattan needs is a human torch."
Watching Iron Man rush back into the darkness, Human Torch hesitated, then helplessly flew back towards the Baxter Building.
Iron Man, on the other hand, is situated on the edge between night and day.
No projection devices were found at that altitude.
"So our circus ringmaster projected the image from the ground." Tony took out the small ball, scanned and analyzed it high in the air, then transmitted the data from the new projector to Hank Pym, and also had Jarvis analyze it himself.
However, after entering the darkness of Manhattan, Tony Stark found that he could not see anything. He decisively had Jarvis shut down all optical acquisition and only used sonar imaging, while also turning off sound acquisition. After sealing himself inside the armor, he used another system to receive external information. Only a small window in the lower left corner still displayed what he heard and saw.
"Tony Stark, a nuisance, someone who'll ruin my show."
Mysterio floated in front of him with his arms crossed, but according to the sonar image, there was actually no one in front of him. Tony waited for his nonsense, but he did not expect to receive a very shocking message.
"I've prepared some small gifts especially for you, Tony Stark."
"I don't like it when people hand me things."
"This wasn't meant for you either."
The sudden attack slammed into him, and the violent explosion ripped his armor off. Several seconds later, Jarvis transmitted a signal: "Sir, anti-aircraft missile detection detected."
"That's just in time, Jarvis."
"I know how you ruined my performance, Avengers." Mysterio stood in front of Iron Man: "Sound, but you should also know better than anyone that in this day and age, weapons are simply faster than sound."
The perspective shifts back to Earth, watching another Mysterio ascend into the sky. Peter scratches his head and chooses to continue. While fighting the Human Torch, he thought of Susan Boyle, the Invisible Woman from the Fantastic Four. Although unsure of his abilities, Peter felt that perhaps Susan's powers could deal with Mysterio, so he decided to seek help at Baxter Tower.
In addition, although Mysterio made a big show of it, there didn't seem to be many special effects, as if... he was waiting for something.
"Welcome, citizens of New York. A full half hour has passed now, and everyone should be out of the way by now. So, I'd like to add a few rules."
Mysterio's visions appeared in every corner of New York, brazenly proclaiming his evil plans and expressing serious dissatisfaction with the heroes' countermeasures.
"Some people have come up with ways to cheat and avoid my performance, which I am very unhappy about. So, I found the location of the superheroes, who are about to receive my gift."
Judging from the sonar, more than a dozen drones were heading towards Peter. According to his spider-sense, Parker could not sense any danger, but for some reason, he still felt that he should take cover.
The drones chose to charge forward in a suicidal attack. He dodged left and right, hooking the drones with his webs, and then smashed them into another drone. However, without exception, all the drones that landed on the ground emitted strong electromagnetic pulses, covering the entire surrounding area.
Mysterio knew they were using sonar to avoid the interference of optical illusions, so he used drones carrying small-scale EMPs to disable their sonar equipment—Iron Man wouldn't dare use large-scale EMPs to disable the entire Manhattan, but Mysterio only needed to deliver the EMPs to the superheroes.
Fortunately, Peter Parker wasn't just relying on sonar imaging in his fight. He stood still, took a deep breath, then leaped up, grabbed a drone flying towards him, and slammed it to the ground. Then, instinctively, he launched webs, stuck the drone to it, and threw it towards another drone charging towards him. At the same time, he jumped, stepped on a drone, and simultaneously tore another drone in half.
His spider-like reaction helped him perfectly resolve the attack.
All of this was captured on camera by an octopus robot protruding from the sewer.
"It's perfect. Such reaction speed, such agility. Even without any sensory aids, Spider-Man is still so powerful."
Otto Octavia adjusted his glasses with his mechanical claw.
Since spiders are so powerful, what kind of surprises will scorpions, their natural enemies, bring?
