"this guy is the strongest of them, and what the hell is up with his ability?" rex thought, his heart pounding as he read wallen's stats. his mind reeled. steel summoning? sure, he'd seen people harden their bodies into metal or create weapons from their own essence, but summoning steel from thin air? that was an entirely new level of absurdity.
rex's lips curled into a sharp grin. "guess there's a lot i still don't know about abilities in this world. let's see what they're made of."
the men surrounding him were sharply dressed in suits, their tailored outfits clashing with the raw menace in their stances. they weren't here for diplomacy.
"what does the valenbrook family want with me?!" rex demanded, his mind flashing briefly to seraphina. she was the only valenbrook he knew and of course, she couldn't possibly have sent them. was it that damn law of shadows at work again? first, it was from the voss family, now it's the valenbrook
"you're not in any position to get answers," the leader sneered, his voice like steel scraping against stone. he raised a hand, pointing directly at rex. "get him!"
the command struck like a gunshot, and the air ignited with movement. five men lunged at rex in unison, their speed blurring the night. one of them, a blur of motion faster than the rest, aimed a devastating punch at rex's head.
a week ago, rex wouldn't have stood a chance. but now? now, he was a different beast.
rex sidestepped the punch with fluid precision, the man's momentum carrying him forward. before his attacker could recover, rex twisted his body and unleashed an aether-infused kick that slammed into the man's temple. the sheer force sent him sprawling, blood spraying in an arc across the pavement.
"one down," rex muttered, his eyes flicking to the others.
the air around him grew dense as his aether surged, casting a golden glow over his body. his fists burned brighter, brighter until they became searing flames of power.
"let's dance." the smirk never left his face as he charged forward, fists blazing.
rex's grin widened into something feral, his adrenaline roaring like wildfire. the night air was thick with tension, crackling with the latent energy of the impending clash. the three remaining attackers tightened their formation, their expressions grim but determined.
the fire elemental was the first to move, raising his arms. flames burst forth, spiraling into a roaring inferno. the heat singed the edges of rex's clothes, but he didn't flinch. his fists, wreathed in aether, glowed like miniature suns.
"that's cute," rex taunted, his voice dripping with mockery. "let's see if your fire can match mine."
with a burst of speed, he closed the distance, weaving through the firestorm with uncanny precision. the flames licked at his skin, but his aether shield absorbed most of the damage. rex ducked low, then sprang upward, his fist rocketing into the elemental's jaw. the impact cracked like thunder, and the man was hurled backward, crashing into a parked car with a metallic screech.
the teleportation user vanished in a blink, reappearing behind rex with a blade aimed for his spine. but rex's god's eyes flared, catching the flicker of movement. he twisted just in time, his aether-infused palm slamming into the blade and shattering it like glass.
"not fast enough," rex snarled, spinning on his heel and delivering a roundhouse kick to the man's ribs. the teleporter crumpled, gasping for air as he hit the ground.
the beast transformation user stepped forward, his body grotesquely shifting. his arms bulged, claws extending as his skin darkened and hardened into a leathery hide. his growl was guttural, primal, and the ground seemed to tremble beneath his weight.
"so, you're the heavy hitter," rex muttered, rolling his shoulders. "let's see if you can take a punch."
the beast roared and charged, each step a miniature earthquake. rex braced himself, his aether coiling around his fists like a living entity. when the beast swung a massive claw, rex met it head-on, his fist colliding with the attack in an explosion of light and force. the shockwave rippled outward, shattering nearby windows and forcing the other combatants to shield their eyes.
the beast staggered, but it wasn't out. it lunged again, swiping with relentless fury. rex ducked, weaved, and countered, each movement precise and brutal. his fists landed like sledgehammers, breaking through the beast's defenses. with a final uppercut, he sent the creature sprawling, its transformation faltering as it slumped to the ground.
rex straightened, his breath steady despite the exertion. the street was littered with defeated bodies, the air thick with the smell of burnt asphalt and ozone. his aether still burned brightly, casting eerie shadows around him.
and then, wallen valenbrook stepped forward. unlike his subordinates, he moved with measured calm, his suit unruffled, his gaze cold and calculating. with a flick of his wrist, a massive steel hammer materialized in his hand, its surface gleaming ominously under the streetlights.
"so, you're the boss," rex said, his smirk returning. "took you long enough."
wallen's voice was as sharp and unyielding as the steel he wielded. "you've got spirit, i'll give you that. but spirit alone won't save you."
with a swift motion, wallen swung the hammer. the air screamed as the massive weapon arced toward rex, who barely dodged in time. the hammer struck the ground, sending chunks of asphalt flying in every direction.
rex's grin widened. "finally, someone who might actually make me break a sweat."
